In a matter of six months, I went from having never visited Las Vegas my entire adult life to visiting twice. Any desire to visit in my younger days was short-lived. It was, of course, a hot spot for birthday trips and bachelorette parties yet never on my radar. Those weren’t the kind of bachelorette parties my friends and I had—at least, not most of us. And as time passed, that scene just didn’t appeal to me, a feeling that became more absolute as I got older.

Fast forward to this past year when U2 kicked off their U2:UV Achtung Baby residency at Sphere and I suddenly had a reason to visit Las Vegas. I’ve been to every U2 tour since 1992—starting with Achtung Baby when I practically was a baby at just 14 years old. So seeing them in Las Vegas was a non-negotiable since this wasn’t a tour I could see in another city; they were only playing in Las Vegas. We went to the opening night at Sphere (shared in my Las Vegas travel guide) which was so incredible and magical and when my husband proposed that we go again for the last night of the tour, I happily agreed. Only, this time we’d take our ten-year-old daughter with us, making it more of a family-friendly trip, not that our first trip was anything terribly wild. I don’t gamble and don’t care to learn, and remember, dear reader, that my bedtime is typically around 9PM.

Anything Goes in Las Vegas

It seems intuitive in hindsight, but people wear anything and everything (or nothing, in some cases) in Las Vegas. Yet, before our first trip there, I found myself Googling things like, “what to wear in Vegas woman over 40” because I truly had no idea what to pack. That’s not my norm; I usually have loads of outfit ideas for any trip we’re taking. But Vegas was uncomfortably foreign to me. In my mind, Vegas was all glitz, sequins, tight everything and boobs.

I’m in my mid-40’s. My midlife style doesn’t include much in the way of glitz, sequins or tight clothes. And yeah, I have boobs, but only on occasion do I flaunt a little cleavage. That’s not to say women in midlife shouldn’t rock any of those looks; it’s just not my personal style. I couldn’t get comfortable with the idea of wearing things I thought people wore in Vegas. But that’s the thing—people wear all kinds of things in Vegas. Sure, there’s glitz and glam, sequins and sparkles, leather and lace—all of the Vegas stereotypes. And there’s jeans and sweatshirts and sneakers, too. Embracing my style and pieces that make me feel comfortable and like myself was absolutely acceptable. It was a good reminder to practice what I preach: wear what you like, wherever you’re going, whether you’re in midlife or your mid-20’s. Once I overcame my mindset hurdle, styling outfits and packing for Las Vegas was easy.

There’s a little bit of everything in Las Vegas. If you’re traveling there for the first time and you’re in your mid-40s or beyond, don’t waste even a second stressing about what to wear. Wear what you like and you’ll be most comfortable. But if you need some ideas, I can help.

Daytime Las Vegas Looks for Women 40+

Your daytime plans will influence outfit choices, but sticking with comfy, casual options is a safe bet for most things during the day in Las Vegas. Bottoms might be your favorite go-to denim, elevated joggers or a slip skirt (which can do double-duty for a nighttime look). Add a graphic tee and a blazer, a button-up or a blouse. A casual dress paired with sneakers is a solid daytime option, too. Because you’re going to want to wear sneakers! You’ll be doing a lot of walking.

A jacket for daytime or evening is a good idea. Our visits to Las Vegas were in late September and early March when the weather was on the cooler side and I needed a light jacket. One of the days we were there just recently, in March, the weather was wild with extreme winds and I found myself in a repeated cycle of putting my jacket on and taking it off while we walked the Strip. I suspect you’d want a lightweight jacket in most seasons in Vegas since it can be cool in the resorts, casinos, show venues and restaurants. My jackets of choice included a denim jacket, a utility jacket and a blazer.

Nighttime Las Vegas Looks for Women 40+

Similar to daytime, your nighttime look all depends on what you’re doing. Dinner and a show can be as casual as jeans and a nice top, but a fun dress is a safe choice if you’re headed to a fancier dinner and cocktails. Consider a layering option such as a blazer or a leather jacket. Again, opt for pieces that feel like you and that you’re comfortable wearing.

I compiled the pieces shown above, along with a few other options, in a virtual catalog to inspire outfits for your trip to Las Vegas.

What I Packed and Wore in Las Vegas

Since I had just visited Las Vegas in September, I had a good grasp on what I wanted to pack to wear on my most recent visit. I took a little time to pull options out of my closet and try on pieces to see how I liked different combinations. This small effort is worth it to show up knowing you have outfits that fit you properly and you feel good wearing, and it just might open your eyes to combinations you’ve never before tried.

What I Packed for Las Vegas

Here’s what I packed:

  • 1 cami

  • 1 sweater

  • 2 pairs of jeans

  • 1 t-shirt

  • 1 blazer

  • 1 chambray shirt

As you can see, I didn’t pack much for this trip and happily fit everything in carry-on luggage. I didn’t even take a backpack which felt good! The only shoes I took were the ones I wore on our travel day—my Vejas sneakers. I wore them with everything all weekend. And I layered my denim jacket over my utility jacket on our travel day, a look that I hadn’t thought about but really liked.

From left to right above: my travel day outfit, daytime and evening outfits, and return travel day outfit.

You can check out what I packed and wore on my first trip to Las Vegas in my Las Vegas Travel Guide.
