Debunking the 5 Biggest Midlife Style Misconceptions

Debunking the 5 Biggest Midlife Style Misconceptions

Why is it that figuring out what to wear can sometimes be the hardest task to accomplish on any given day? You’re juggling work, family and a social life, and yet somehow, figuring out what to wear feels like the hardest task. You’re staring at a packed closet but still feel like you have nothing that makes you feel amazing for that big meeting or night out.

You want to walk into any room and feel confident, put-together and effortlessly chic. You’re aiming for that head-turning, “she’s got it all together” vibe.

But it’s hard when you’re bombarded with all the noise: “Every woman needs these 5 things,” “Don’t wear <fill in the blank> after 40” or “Just buy more clothes!” Sound familiar? No wonder you feel stuck.

As a personal stylist who works with women in midlife, I’ve heard it all. So today I’m breaking down five of the biggest midlife style misconceptions that are keeping you from having the effortless style you desire.

Myth # 1: Every woman needs these 5 things in her wardrobe

This schtick has been so overdone and quite frankly, it isn’t at all helpful. Every woman doesn’t necessarily need a little black dress, a leather jacket, a white button-up or some other piece of clothing that someone arbitrarily decided long ago. I’m sure you’ve seen these proclamations here on social media and in fashion magazines but it’s not realistic. When I think about the women I work with, several of them have no use for a little black dress! What’s important is to consider lifestyle when thinking about what belongs in your closet.

Myth #2: Your age and/or size are a factor in what you wear

This is a pretty antiquated way of thinking. How old you are or what size you wear shouldn’t be factors that influence your personal style. Getting the right fit and finding what you feel comfortable in–what makes you feel like you–is paramount.

Myth #3: More options will help you achieve effortless style

This might sound like a tricky one because you think if you have more things to choose from you’re going to be able to come up with more outfits but the opposite is true. More options cause overwhelm and oftentimes one-off pieces–things that you can only wear with one other thing in your closet. Less really is more when it comes to effortless style.

Myth #4: Fashion over comfort

I cringe because I actually uttered these words back in the day when I wore sky-high heels with the pointiest of toes. Fortunately, I’ve since learned that it’s possible to have great style and be comfortable.

Myth #5: What you wear doesn’t really matter

It does matter, and it should matter to you. And I don’t mean that it should matter in a self-objectification kind of way, but what we wear impacts how we feel. Your outfit can boost your mood or it can make you feel like you want to be invisible.

Style doesn’t have to be overwhelming, even in midlife. It’s about working smarter and choosing intentional pieces that make you feel your best every day.
