How to Create Spring Styles

Last week I participated in the “Spring in My Closet” style challenge put together by Style Thief Fashion and Urbanite | Suburbanite. The idea was that you don’t have to get hung up on spring trends to be stylish this season (or any season, for that matter). The challenge encouraged you to dress for spring with what’s already in your closet, something I am a huge proponent of doing. Wearing what’s in your closet is a focus not only for how I dress but also for how I work with clients, so I was excited to participate. They created these daily prompts to encourage wearing what’s in your closet for spring:

It was fun to have a prompt each day and I like that they were vague enough to allow you to really go in any direction you wanted with your outfit. You can see my daily looks on my Instagram, @jgpstyledme.

This challenge inspired me to explore lots of different ways to wear spring styles. For example, what if you want to wear a print but your closet consists mostly of solids? Or what if you’re afraid to wear white because you’re prone to spilling? I decided to take each of the five daily “Spring in My Closet” prompts and break them down here to show you how you can wear spring styles in many different ways.

Spring Prints

You don’t have to wear a bold floral top to add a dash of spring to your style. If you prefer solids, for example, you can easily add a print to your look with an accessory, a piece of jewelry or footwear. The print can be as subtle or as striking as you like, and it doesn’t have to be floral!

Spring Colors

Spring’s color palette is endless! Whether you like pastels or brights, all are welcome in springtime. Opt for an eye-catching texture, particularly in handbags and footwear this spring, to add interest to your look.

Spring Layers

A layer doesn’t automatically mean a jacket. Be creative with your layering pieces and don’t forget that your long-sleeve button-front shirts work for this purpose, too. Adding a layer is one of the easiest ways to elevate and pull together your look.

White for Spring

I embrace white year-round. I don’t subscribe to any fashion rules, certainly not the antiquated one that suggests that you can’t wear white before Memorial Day or after Labor Day. That said, I know white can be polarizing for some people for various reasons and the most important thing when it comes to fashion, in my opinion, is that you feel good which means you’ll also look good. If wearing white jeans doesn’t make you feel good, then don’t wear them. There are still lots of ways you can incorporate white into your styles this season.

Spring Dress/Skirt

If you don’t like shorts, a dress or skirt is a wonderful way to stay cool this season. And a dress, in particular, is easy. If you struggle to put outfits together, a dress is one and done! (But you should also contact me so that we can edit your closet and make getting dressed an easy and enjoyable experience for you!)

I hope these ideas sparked some new ways for you to wear and pair pieces that already exist in your closet this spring and into summer. If you try any of these styles or have other ideas for the season, please share them in the comments below. As always, I’d love to help edit your closet for the season or work on a wardrobe refresh with you.
