Summer Poolside Essentials

I recently shared some of my favorite one-piece swimsuits for summer, and I have some essentials that go along with them for a perfect poolside day!

These clothespins are the best for clipping my towel to my chair. I previously bought the cute colorful plastic ones and learned that they simply couldn’t withstand the hot Texas sun; they became brittle and broke, something I don’t have to worry about with the stainless steel. We have a bunch of beach towels, but these lightweight Turkish towels are my favorite. They’re super soft and not as bulky as a terrycloth towel which is great if you need to throw it in a beach bag. Crochet cover-ups are trending this summer and there are tons of styles to choose from. I like this long, sleeveless style and this short one, both of which are available in a rainbow of colors. I really love the look of a men’s button-front shirt as a cover-up, though, and this linen one is a classic choice. I recently heard Kate from The Small Things blog share a summer haircare tip that has been a game-changer for my daughter and me. First, make sure you’re using SPF on your scalp especially if you have your hair parted. I don’t always like to wear a hat so I reach for this SPF mist. Second—and this is the tip that has been most helpful—spray your hair with leave-in conditioner as soon as you get out of the pool and comb it through before you wash your hair. Since wash my hair shortly after getting out of the pool and using the conditioner, I opt for a drugstore leave-in conditioner and like this one. I can’t explain the science behind it but basically, the conditioner is giving your hair some glide and… conditioning it… so that when you get in the shower shampooing it is easier. It works! My lovely family gifted me this Yeti wine tumbler for Mother’s Day and you can’t go wrong with Yeti… (PRO TIP: opt for a lighter color as this one gets mighty hot to the touch in direct sunlight! But fear not, the rosé stays cold!) Our outdoor speaker is great because it’s lightweight, has a handy little carrying handle and the sound is excellent. We use it all the time, everywhere. And lastly, a high-quality, comfy float is a must to relax in with a good book. I’ve liked this one for years and they last. Happy summering!
