How to Refresh Your Wardrobe

I don’t think I know anyone who doesn’t get bored with what’s in their closet from time to time. For me, closet boredom often strikes during times of seasonal transition. And while an entirely new wardrobe sometimes feels appealing, it’s not realistic. There are ways you can refresh your wardrobe without completely overhauling everything that’s in it.

If you’re feeling bored with your closet, try one of these tactics for a quick and easy wardrobe refresh:

1. Create new combos

Instead of pairing the same pieces together and wearing them as you always do, force yourself to create new outfit combos. Chances are, you have lots of outfit pairings in your closet that you’ve never considered because when you find something that works you get in a rut. We all do it. So how can you create a new combo? Start with the bottom piece you plan to wear, and instead of reaching for the same shirt you always wear with it, choose something else! Challenge yourself to do this the next few times you wear the item and in no time you’ll have added that many more looks to your already existing wardrobe. If you really want to push yourself, consider new color combinations and think less about colors matching one another and more about color palettes complementing one another, or try mixing prints and patterns.

2. Out of sight, out of mind

Although this is a trick I use on our tween, it works equally well for adults (myself included)! If you always wear the same pieces over and over again—even though you have plenty of other options in your closet—try keeping those tried and true pieces out of the closet for a while. This will essentially force you to dress yourself in the pieces that are available to you in your closet. Either leave the frequently-worn garments in the laundry until you’ve made your way through your closet wearing other pieces, or you could simply store the pieces you wear too frequently somewhere other than your closet (i.e., leave them in the laundry room, another closet, etc.). Once you’ve sufficiently worked your way through your closet, you can start bringing back the old favorites.

3. Update accessories

Accessories can make your wardrobe fun again, and it can be much more cost-effective to add a few new pairs of earrings or a necklace to your stash rather than updating the clothes in your closet. I find it hard to resist Target’s accessories section and have especially been loving their purses lately. Madewell also has so many cute bandanas that can add a little panache. Perhaps you already have a sizable accessories collection and you just need to refresh your looks by bringing some of your less-worn pieces to your daily styles to get yourself out of your rut.
